Why am I getting an 'Engine Malfunction' warning in my Ford Mondeo?

I have a Ford Mondeo, five years old, 48,000 miles. A warning light appeared on my dash which signifies 'Engine Malfunction'. The car drives as normal, and the oil is ok. Any suggestions please?
