Should I buy a Volkswagen Golf V GTI?

I’m after a five-door hatchback that’s fun to drive, has good build quality and equipment. I have around £6500 to spend. My daily commute is around 10 miles each way, consisting of country roads and a little dual carriageway. There's very little (if any) stop-start traffic or jams to contend with. I’m seriously considering a Mk5 Golf, with a specific interest in the 2-litre petrol GT. I fear the 1.4 will be too laborious, and 1.6 possibly too gutless. My wife was a 2002 Mazda 323 1.6 GSI, which I find tiresome due to the lack of low-end torque.

I don’t think my mileage warrants a diesel (although I’m sure I’d enjoy the torque), so that’s why I’m thinking 2-litre GT. I’ve test-driven one, and I definitely enjoyed the grunt, the feeling of solidity, the five-star crash rating, the styling and the equipment levels were fairly good too. I know, if the ESP hasn’t failed and been replaced, that there is a risk there. I also realise there will be a road tax and insurance costs to consider. You’ve given the car five stars so it seems a good choice, and it's possibly better built (and slightly less common!) than a Focus. Am I making a good decision?

SEAT Leon 1.8 20VT Cupra. Much better than a Golf GTI.

I own a 09 plate Scirocco GT TDi 140, but fancy a fun cabrio that can be used as an everyday vehicle. I've £20,000 to spend, in addition to trade-in. Any suggestions?
My wife and I (in our late 50s) want a 'fun' car. We have £8,000 to spend and we're looking at either a Nissan 350Z or a Honda S2000. Your recommendation would be appreciated.

Great fun to drive with superb handling. Throaty exhaust note. Well equipped as standard.
