Why does my Rover 416 smell strongly of petrol? Is it safe?

I have just bought a Rover 416 (1996 N reg) automatic with a Honda engine. I noticed a strong petrol smell inside the car when I filled it up fully and now whilst I'm driving I continue to smell it. I can also smell it strongly when I walk to the back of the car. I'm really worried that something awful will happen when me and the kids are in the car and have stopped driving it. What could be the problem and how costly might it be?

Impossible to say. All I can do is urge you to get to to a garage ASAP, without the children in it when you take it to the garage.
