How can I cheaply repair my MINI Convertible's faulty roof?

I have a MINI Convertible on a 54 plate with just under 33,000 miles on the clock. I have had the car about 18 months. The gearbox was replaced after a few months of my purchase, due to a manufacturer fault. I now have a roof that will not open on one side and my local BMW dealer wants to charge £2000 for a new one, which they say is a mechanism fault. I have had convertibles for over thirty years and I have never had a problem with them. Now I have a MINI and I have these problems. I cannot afford to pay for this and why should I? I have been told that it is a manufacturer's fault by an outsider, but BMW have said that the warranty has run out, so therefore I have to pay. The weather in this country hardly calls for a lot of usage with the car roof. I would really appreciate your advice.

Yes, that's the BMW price. If I was you I'd search around agricultural machinery specialists as the electro hydraulic mechanism are similar and a good guy will be able to fix the existing mechanism somehow.
