Is there a known problem with the Ford Fusion gearbox?

We were recently driving our Ford Fusion when it lost all power. The Green Flag driver said that in his experience, as the car still went into gear, it might be a coil or some other small part. He did not think it was anything major. We were recovered to a garage who diagnosed a fault with the modulator (cost £800 to repair). They fitted it, but said it had not cured the fault and that it had burnt out the motor so we needed the second part, and the cost of repair was £2003. The car has only done 47,400 miles.

We agreed to have the fault done as Ford Customer Relationship Centre told us they could not give any financial assistance as the car was old, because there was no known problem with this transmission, and that we were the third owners and we did not know how the previous owners had driven the car. Is this a common fault with the Fusion transmission?

I guess this is an automated manual (you didn't say, but reading between the lines) and yes, this type of transmission is prone to becoming problematic after a few years.
