My photocard driving licence is about to expire - is the paper licence valid in the meantime?

I have received a renewal application for my photocard driving licence which has now expired. However, my paper licence does not expire until 2015. Am I legally allowed to drive on this paper licence or must I renew the photo card driving licence? This also applies to my husband. His paper licence expires at the age of 70 in two years' time.

Renew the photo licence that has now superseded the old bit of paper anyway.
