Can you recommend a rugged used 4x4?
I'm looking for a rugged and practical 4x4 as a local run around. Not keen on Land Rover. Something ex-military would be good. Any ideas?

Ex-military in the UK would be Land Rover. The MoD's hanging on to the bigger, more expensive, imported stuff. Older Japs like Troopers and Shoguns can have rust problems. Land Cruiser LCs not as 100 per cent reliable as you might expect.
A pick-up is your best bet. For relatively cheap I'd go for an Isuzu Rodeo (D Max in other markets) with the 2.5 or 3.0 I-TEQ engine from 2008. Nice engine and gearbox to drive. 4x4 does about 35mpg.
