Best used estate for £10k?

We are buying our first family estate and need some advice. We have read your reviews which have been helpful but we still feel overwhelmed by the market/dealer advice/online reviews.

We are looking for a reliable family estate for a small family that can cope with motorway commutes and country lane driving (we live in a village). Ideally an economical vehicle with lower emissions/tax band and most likely diesel.

We have always driven Volkswagen Group cars and wondered if a Skoda Estate would be recommended?

We have also seen a Vauxhall Astra Tourer estate we liked but have no idea if this is a reliable brand or are we better sticking to the Volkswagen group? Please could you help us? We have £10,000 to spend.

Best to avoid all VWG EA189 diesels until they have sorted out the emissions software and they haven't even started with the 1.6TDIs yet. However, Skoda Octavia estates from 2013 have a new EA 288 manifold in head engine that is very low emission and so far has not had any problems. If you can find one for £10k then it would probably be okay. This suggests that you can find one for around £11,000: www.honestjohn.co.uk/used-prices/Skoda/Octavia/201.../ Note that the one for £8,500 is a late registered OLD model. You don't want that. You want a genuine 2013 model, like the Fords of Winsford car.
