Ford Focus - EcoBoost or diesel?
I currently have a Ford Focus petrol (57 plate). I've had it six years and its been brilliant. I've put 127,000 miles on it and it's not put a foot wrong. It's now time for a new one though.
I'm likely to get another focus or something similar, but I wonder if you could offer some advice on a particular issue I have. I keep seeing a lot of these new economic petrol engines that are 1.0-litre and do very good MPG. I currently do between 20-25,000 miles a year and I'm just wondering if a car with one of these sorts of engines would be better than a diesel for this sort of mileage?

I did a year in a Peugeot 308 1.2 Puretech 130 which I rate as the best of the 1.0 - 1.2 3 or 4 cylinder turbo petrol engines, and I averaged 49mpg. You will do 10mpg or more better with a 1.6 diesel, but face additional costs of AdBlue (with some) and the need to clean out or replace DPFs every 80k miles or so. By the time you've paid maybe £1000 extra to buy the diesel in the first place and paid for the expensive replacement parts you might be better off with a small turbo petrol such as the 1.2 Puretech.
