Volkswagen Golf - Is it strong enough to tow a caravan?

I have recently bought a used Volkswagen Golf 1.9 DSG to tow my caravan. I was told that the car would be powerful enough to tow, but the mechatronic unit has just failed. Is this related to towing? I am now worried about using the car to tow.

The problem may have been age related. Or may have been maintenance related because this dual wet clutch six-speed box requires a change of fluid and filter every three years and this is often neglected. Obviously as part of the repair, yours now has fresh fluid.
