Where can I get a tow hitch for my 1997 Volvo 940 estate in France?
I live in France and I'm in the process of gathering quotes to have a tow hitch fitted to my 1997 Volvo 940 estate, which is a late 2.3 T version. So far, one French garage has told me that pre-1997 and post-1996 Volvo 940 estates take different tow hitches, and the latter is like hen's teeth. I find this difficult to believe. Did Volvo really change the way a tow hitch is fitted just for the last year of manufacture of the 940? I suppose it's possible, given the additional safety gear they shoe-horned in, but I'm surprised. I also called our nearest Volvo dealer, who said he wasn't sure if they still made the part but he'd call me back (he didn't, naturally), which again, I find difficult to believe. It's not that old.
Surely Volvo can still sell me a tow hitch, even if no one else can? Finally, I started looking on the internet and found the Witter VL22 hitch, which supposedly fits my car. Everyone seems to be selling it as fitting Volvo 940 estates right up to 1998, anyway. So that being the case, the French garage must be wrong. Can you shed any light as to whether or not there's any truth in this odd story of the differing tow hitch fittings on Volvo 940 estates, or indeed if I should stop worrying and buy a Witter tow hitch, if the French garage say they can't get one?

An EC Directive Type Approving tow hitches came in about then which will be why there is a problem. For the later car the hitch has to be type-approved, yet the '97 940 was at the end of its model life. Maybe Witter does one. But please go for the removable type and don't go damaging people's cars with a protruding unused tow hitch. This has happened to my car's once too often.
