What's the best 4x4 for £2000?

I am looking for a fun, low cost second car to take the dog to the beach or pick up something from the DIY store. I have £2000 to spend and want a petrol vehicle with all-wheel drive. I looked at the Suzuki Vitara and Toyota RAV4 but at this money they are very high mileage.

Decent Jimnys are quite expensive too and, while they are great off road, they are not good at all on the road. Lots of original shape 1990s RAV-4s about for buttons money (under £1000). They are almost classic and have an astonishingly versatile interior. Even in the SWB version the seats can be reclined into a bed. And they drive better than a Vitara or Jimny.

Outstanding ability off-road. Cute looks, especially as a soft-top. Cheap to buy.
