Which SUV is best for family life?
I am looking to replace our 2006 Saab 93 estate, your advice on an SUV style vehicle as a replacement would be appreciated? Our budget is up to £14,000 for a car of 3 years/ 30,000 miles (inc P/x if there is much value in the Saab).
Our requirements are for a car allowing me to do motorway driving for work (circa 20,000 a year), diesel and fuel economy (50mpg). As a second car it would also have to be capable of two children and all that they involved at weekends hence sensible rear legroom.
I am currently looking at the BMW X1 and Nissan Qashqai but open to your suggestions for the best / most suitable in the market sector. Due to family events safety is a key priority and hence five star NCAP.
I am a regular reader and appreciate you professional and practical advice, many thank.

If it's a Qashqai it has to be the 1.6dCi 130, not the 1.5dCi. Much more modern engine that has been virtually trouble-free for nearly six years now. Old model X1 not so good. Worries about timing chains and 20,000 mile oil changes on BMW 2.0 diesel engines. Smaller, a KIA cee'd or Hyundai i30 1.6CRDI might do the job, and if you can find one within budget a Honda Civic Sport Tourer 1.6iDTEC is a 60mpg car.

Comfortable to drive with a robust interior, good engines, popularity means lots of choice on the used market.
