Cheap used Honda Civic 2.0 Type S good choice?

I'm after a car that my semi retired mechanic friend can easily maintain without having to use any too much electronic fault finding gizmos. I have been attracted to the reliability of Honda. I wanted your opinion on a 2005 Honda Civic 160PS Type-S 5-door with 58,000 miles with full service history which includes 11 Honda main dealer stamps for £1600.

Also I wanted to find out why you think Honda seem to have kept their trust in petrol engined cars while most manufactures seem to have migrated to diesels given their relative superior fuel economy, torque and CO2 emissions.?
