Why are my Volkswagen Golf's gears stiff?

I was driving along when my Mk4 Volkswagen Golf stalled and I tried to put it back into gear. The gear stick was so stiff, it just wouldn't budge. I forced it into gear and eventually it went into gears two, three, four and five, but it was still hard in first and reverse. I called the RAC and the guy checked the clutch, gear leverages and everything else and he said everything is fine and looks normal, with nothing broken and no damage signs. I spoke to another mechanic and he said there is a high chance that it could be the gear selector which apparently is a common fault.

I drove the car home about two minutes away with the RAC behind me, and he jacked the car up to see underneath and still found no fault. When I was driving home, once the car went into gear it was driving as normal, no jerking, no abnormal revs and the gears didn't pop out or anything, it was just really stiff to change gears. With your experience and knowledge what might be the fault here?

Firstly check all external gear gear linkage for freedom of movement. If all of this is ok, then it is most likely that the problem exists inside the gearbox and will require investigation by a skilled mechanic.
