Timing chain problem on SEAT Ibiza 1.2 TSI - a known issue?
I read with interest your response to a recent question regarding a noisy timing chain in an Audi A1. My 2011 Seat Ibiza 1.2 TSI has suffered from a similar problem and a while ago, the timing chain was replaced under warranty and this seemed to cure the problem. However, the noise recently returned and whilst the vehicle was having its routine main dealer service carried out, I asked for the noise to be investigated and was informed that all was okay. Last week the epc and engine management lights came on and the car failed to run properly. It was returned to the dealer who have subsequently had to strip the engine and have advised that the engine is losing compression through the piston rings which are badly worn and the short engine block will need to be replaced at a cost of £4000 including labour. Have you heard of any similar issues with this engine or happen to know what might have caused the failure or if any defect in the timing chain could have potentially contributed? I am hoping that an extended warranty I have will cover at least some of the cost but given the age of the car, the relatively low mileage (50k) and the fact that it has always been serviced regularly by a main dealer, could I consider asking for a goodwill contribution from SEAT?

Piston ring failure is common in Volkswagen 1.8 and 2.0 litre EA888 TFSI, but I had not heard of it before in the 1.2 litre EA211. The problem is usually caused by Volkswagen filling the engines with synthetic oil on the production line, that does not enable the piston oil rings to bed in properly, then running the engines on degraded oil under Volkswagen's ridiculous and dangerous 'LongLife' oil service regime. Yes, try to get some goodwill from SEAT.
