Will the Volkswagen emissions scandal change my VED band?

I can't see how any government would attempt to claw back VED on any vehicle affected by this. A sure vote loser. With the new VED rates due in 2017, surely the logical response is to apply it to vehicles registered after the date it is proved these vehicles have a higher than claimed reading. I also don't see what the manufacturers have done wrong. They were told the vehicles needed to pass a test and how that test would be applied. They have adapted the engine to pass that test. The fact the US authorities are now complaining real world driving sees that reading go way over the permitted scale is surely their fault not VW or anyone else's? If they wanted real world readings, then maybe they should have applied a real world test. The fiasco of all this is that any diesel engine from any manufacturer has been wrongly tainted by the media. Yes they're smelly and harmful, but so are many other mechanical forms of transport and industry.

This is nothing to do with CO2 based VED and everything to do with NOx. The CO2 tax regime is due to change in 2017 anyway, so could change concurrently with a new CO2 testing regime. It is true that the route to lowering average CO2 emissions has been to make more diesels, but that was an EU Directive not UK Government legislation.
