Can my son use cutting paste on his Volkswagen Golf's metallic paintwork?

My son has a metallic black 2001 Volkswagen Golf which has minor scratches and some slightly dull paintwork in places. I understand that you have to be careful with metallic paint. Would it be ok to use a cutting paste and then polish?

Cutting paste is fine to use on metallic paint. In fact there are special versions available for different metallic colours.
