Can changing tyre brand really affect the handling of my Mazda MX-5?
I purchased my Mazda MX-5 1.6 in 2006 having read your in-depth review. At the time I recall that you recommended ensuring that the car came with Yokohama tyres, which I did. After 42,000 miles, the front tyres needed changing which, like many women I suspect, I left to my husband to deal with. I now have two Avon tyres fitted and all necessary wheel balancing performed. When driving for the first time the car's steering seemed very odd; incredibly light and the car seemed to not hold the road. The fun has gone from driving my lovely car. In fact it feels positively dangerous! Can two new tyres really make such a difference? Please help as I will be needing tyres for the back very soon as well!

Changing tyres can make a big difference to the handling of a car, and most tyre experts suggest keeping all four tyres the same make and type, especially on a performance or sports car such as an MX-5. Avon tyres tend to be more sporty than other makes, such as Yokohamas, but it really shouldn't feel light and affect the road holding. If you're not happy and it's affecting your enjoyment of the car, we'd suggest returning to the Yokohama tyres in the future.
