Buying nearly new

Which makes the better nearly new buy: skoda octavia 1.4tsi or ford focus 1.5 ecoboost? I'm looking for the best combination of performance, economy and reliability. I've read that the Ford doesn't deliver anywhere near the advertised mpg: is this true and would the skoda perform any better?

The MQB Octavia 1.4TSI 125 is a very solid feeling car. The Focus is lighter and more fun to drive. The advertised mpg is the result from the ECDC tests for which cars are optimised in order to get low CO2 and these results don't translate to the same figures in real life.
