Why is my BMW 3 Series so noisy?
Having recently replaced a 2005 BMW E90 320D (M47 engine) with a 2010 320d Efficient Dynamics (N47) I am getting irritated by the noise level compared to my previous car, particularly under acceleration or higher speeds. Is this down to the tyres, the N47 engine (cam chain is OK), car ride height or just a general drop in sound proofing/quality etc?

I ran a later F30 320dED for 8000 miles (average 63mpg). The noise is from the 16-inch 205/60 R16 Michelin Energy Saver Plus low rolling resistance tyres. They are quieter at higher temperatures in summer: www.honestjohn.co.uk/our-cars/bmw-f30-320d-ed/
