What's the best family car for £3k?

I need to buy a family car on a £3000 budget. The car will replace my old Jaguar XJ, but it must be practical and comfortable, with a nice cabin. What do you recommend?

A Ford Mondeo estate makes the most sense because it will be cheaper to service and repair. But it ain't no Jag.
