What's causing my Ford StreetKa's steering to stiffen up?

I recently bought an 04-reg Ford StreetKA from a dealer. One week later the power steering failed. I stopped as I thought I had a puncture. It was like driving a tractor. I started the engine again and it was fine, but I drove another 100 miles and the steering started getting very hard again. Are you aware of a problem with this?

We have heard of steering racks failing on Ford Ka models (the hatchback): honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/ka-1996/?section=bad so it could well be this.
