Need to replace my Citroen BX - what do you recommend?

I run a 27-year-old Citroen BX diesel but it is now very frail and parts are a problem. What alternative, reliable old diesels would you recommend for the home mechanic on a budget?

Step up into a Xantia. Virtually the same mechanicals and suspension. Or a Peugeot 406 2.0HDI, some of which have been achieving legendary mileages as taxis.
