Engine management light problem with Golf GTI

I have bought my son's 2004 Volkswagen Golf GTIand the yellow engine management system light comes on. Have asked my good local independent garage to fix and they cannot sort it out. Can you recommended an independent garage that might be able to fix it?

The direct injection system has probably led to the inlet valves getting gummed up with tarry carbon deposits. May be possible to Terraclean it. Look in good-garage-guide.honestjohn.co.uk/directory/searc.../ for a reader recommended local VAG specialist.
