Shoddy service from a dealer - what should I do?

Three months ago I purchased a 2008 Volkswagen Scirocco with 45,000 miles on the clock. The car is a petrol mdoel and I bought it from a main dealer in Leeds. After a week of driving the car a variety of warning messages appeared on the dash and I took the car back.

Six electrical faults were found in total and the dealer fixed the car under the warranty. Then just the other day I noticed I had a flat tyre. After trying myself to remove the wheel and then taking the car to local mechanic who also could not remove the wheel the car was taken back to the dealer where they informed me the wheel nuts had been put in "cross threaded" and therefore could not be removed.

They think at least two of the wheels have been put in this way and cannot be removed. I have not had the wheels off in the very short time I have owned the car and they were the last ones to remove the wheels as I paid extra for them to be sprayed black when I bought the car.

The dealer are now telling me they will not be responsible for this and it is my problem to sort out. Where do I stand on this issue and can I hold them responsible for their shoddy work?

Thanks in advance,

A. Steer

What will have happened is that they contracted the wheel painting work out and whoever did it for them cross threaded the bolts. Ask to speak to the dealer principal of the dealership concerned. Simply tell him that if they do not sort it out you will take the car elsewhere, have the work done by another Volkswagen dealer, and sue the for the cost of it in the small claims track of the County Court citing Clegg v Olle Andersson, House of Lords, 2003.
