I have an electrical fault on my Citroen Xantia - what could it be?

My Citroen Xantia lost all but the battery lights on the dash. I managed to get it going by getting a power cable straight from the battery to the glow plugs rail, waiting about ten seconds and then turning the key. I know it's not the battery as I tried another one and it made no difference, and it shouldn't be the immobiliser otherwise it wouldn't start with the cable direct from the battery. Any ideas?
