Buying a new car - what would you recommend?

I am looking for a new car. The car I need has to have quite specific requirements (not least because I have significant back problems). I intend buying new and propose keeping it for about five years, maybe longer.

My main priorities are: easy access, automatic, petrol (low mileage/short journeys) and because of where I live, preferably a 4x4. The only two cars I have been able to find that fit all the above criteria are the Honda CR-V and the Toyota Rav4.

I don't think there is a lot to choose between them in terms of running costs, the RAV4 is marginally more economical in terms of petrol and road tax but I suspect this is offset by the fact it is quicker than the Honda CR-V and is therefore grouped higher for insurance purposes. I imagine servicing costs will also be similar.

I think the deciding factor is likely to be which car provides the most cosseting and comfortable. Seat comfort also comes into this. Both models I am looking at will be on 18-inch wheels. Which one should I buy?

Well, both models are available on 17-inch wheels but the marginal improvement in ride is not worth the greater slop in the steering. The RAV-4 2.0i Valvematic Multidrive S (CVT) is more efficient, quicker and better to drive. The Honda CR-V 2.0i auto is comfortable but frustrating to drive because it isn't really powerful enough to offer a relaxed drive and the box constantly changes gear. I'd say the Toyota five year warranty clinches it.
