Should I buy a hybrid?
I will hopefully retire in a couple of years and am looking for a car that will do a 60 mile round trip every working day for the next two years, but then be OK for shorter journeys in towns and villages much more local to where I live.
I am thinking of a hybrid, either the Honda Jazz or the Toyota Auris. Does this make sense? I have ruled out all electric unfortunately as we will have to do longer trips on occasion.

Yes, makes sense. Jazz about to be replaced by a new model. Auris very good. For a lower price you could also consider a Yaris HSD.
