Should I buy a used Land Rover Discovery?

I am thinking of buying a 2012 Land Rover Discovery HSE with 70,000 miles on the clock. I wanted the HSE because of the high spec and concluded that the high mileage already recorded will mean that the depreciation will already have set in and I will ultimately not lose so much after four years driving. I expect to do around 18,000 to 20,000 per year.

The asking price is £34,995. I understand that a low mileage example would fetch around £44,000 and that this is a direct saving of £9000 upfront.

My logic is based around the car probably having done mainly motorway miles with low wear and tear to date. It started life as an ex-demo and has one subsequent owner for 15 months when most of the mileage was done.

Does my argument stack up or am I taking a tiger by the tail? what future maintenance work is likely to be required?

Check out the Discovery III, Discovery IV and Range Rover entries in www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar where you will see what goes wrong when .

DPFs will be one thing. Diffs and transfer boxes another. If you can talk to someone at The Highways Agency you might be able to find out what goes wrong at what mileages because they have run them to 150,000 miles.
