Buying an estate - recommendations?

We need to replace our 2006 Ford Mondeo Estate, with something similar, but newer.

A Skoda Octavia has been suggested by a friend as has the Volkswagen Passat. It will mostly be trundling up and down the motorway on my commute (50 miles a day) so ideally we wamt something fairly economical but still a reasonable amount of power. Budget is about £10,000 plus trade in for the Mondeo, what do you suggest?

So you don't mean new? You mean used 2nd rather than 3rd generation Octavia estate. Best to avoid the lacklustre and problematic 1.6TDI. A 1.4 TSI might suit, but this with have the 'old' chain cam 1.4TSI 122 rather than the current belt cam EA211 1.4TSI 122. More on Octavias in the entry in www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar
