Will my Golf TDI suffer from DPF problems?
My father bought a 2011 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI a few months ago with 22,500 miles on the clock. It now has 31400 miles and he does 25,000 miles a year but they are mostly in the urban environment and he is worried about the DPF blocking after 3 years/36000 miles.
He is also suffering from less than 40mpg which is about the same as the Golf mk5 1.9 TDi he had previously, does the DPF also affect economy in any way since the 1.6 TDI should be more efficient than the 1.9 TDI?

Yes. If it is not running hot enough, the DPF requires fuel to regenerate. The 1.6TDI is far from a great engine. The 1.9TDI without a DPF was much better.

Comfortable and quiet on the move, enjoyable to drive. Nicely trimmed with great attention to detail. 1.4 TSI sweeter to drive than a diesel.
