What's causing a burning smell from my son's Mercedes-Benz C220?

My son purchased a Mercedes-Benz C220 eight months ago. After driving approximately seven miles there is a strong smell similar to overheating or very hot rubber at the rear of the car. The engine is switched off at this time. The dealer can’t trace any problem. I would be very grateful to receive any comments or advice you may have on this matter.

If it's a C220CDI the smell is the diesel particulate filter regenerating by burning off the soot created from cold starts. It gets very hot.
