Can you recommend an automatic alternative to the Honda Civic?

I have been driving Honda Civics for about the last 15 years or so and have loved them. My current Civic is well overdue for a change. But what has Honda done to the rear window? I positively hate it and will not be buying another Civic at this time. I think the Jazz will be too small, so where do I go from here? My present Civic is a 5-door 1.6 petrol automatic. Could you suggest an alternative please? I don't mind petrol or diesel, but I would prefer an automatic transmission. I would be looking to buy about a 12 - 18 month old 5-door hatchback. I would also prefer a spare wheel even if it's only one of the skinny ones. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A previous generation Hyundai i30 or KIA cee'd 1.6 4-speed auto is as close to the 2001-2006 Civic as you will get, but doesn't have seats that fully recline into a double bed (a feature unique to the 2001-2006 Civic). The latest Civic is pig ugly, but this is forgivable because the load capacity is colossal and the 1.8iVTEC petrol version will do a real 48mpg.

I'm tempted by a Volvo C30 or an S40 to do 8000-10,000 miles per year. But it has to be automatic. Pity they don't do a 1.8 or 2.0 petrol auto. The choice seems to narrow down to a 2.0D Powershitft or...
