Which automatic car offers better fuel economy than my 2001 Volkswagen Golf?
I will soon need to replace my Volkswagen Golf 1.6 Auto, which will be 11 years old shortly and has over 120,000 miles on the clock. I would much appreciate your advice in choosing a similar sized, fully automatic car, but one with lower carbon emissions and hence lower vehicle excise duty and also a model with better fuel consumption I currently average between 30 and 35 mpg. I can spend £20,000.

The obvious choice is a Golf VII 1.2TSI DSG or 1.4TSI DSG. But the forthcoming new Mazda 3 Skyactiv automatic has a stronger torque converter automatic transmission: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/mazda/mazda-3-salo.../. Alternatively, a Renault Captur 120TCe EDC. There will also be a new Honda Jazz CVT-7 next year.

Unrivalled practicality and versatility. Plenty of room for four adults to travel in comfort. Surprisingly fun to drive, especially 1.5 i-VTEC Sport.
