Is £400 a reasonable price to repair the sills on my 1996 Ford Escort?
I run a 1996 Ford Escort Ghia 1.8i Cabriolet. It's done 73,000 miles and is in excellent condition. Recently, I took it to a local garage for its MoT. I was told my car needed new sills to pass and I was given a verbal quote of £300 + VAT (this was said to be from the third-party body shop to which the garage contracts its repairs). I left the car to be repaired and collected it four days later. Without reference to me, the garage paid the bodyshop on my behalf then told me that the cost was actually £400 + VAT - so another £120 is now due. I queried the invoice, reiterating the original verbal quotation. I wonder if, being female, I’m being treated as a soft touch. Irrespective of the disputed quote, is £300 + VAT reasonable and £400 + VAT excessive? What legal redress do I have, if any? Can I complain to a professional standards body? Regrettably, after two decades, this garage will never again get any business from me.

Actually, £400 + VAT is reasonable for cutting out the old rusted sills, welding any further rust that was found, welding on new outer sills and painting. No one knows how expensive a job like this will be until they take the old sills off and see the true extent of the corrosion.
