Is Volkswagen's DSG gearbox issue going largely unreported in the UK?
Living in both the UK and Australia I own two petrol 1.8TSI Passats. Due to intense media scrutiny in Australia regarding DSG gearboxes failures Volkswagen is recalling my Australian car. My UK car is outside the recall dates but I was wondering how, when the story has page 1 billing down under, it appears largely unreported in the UK. I believe cars for both markets are made in Eastern Europe.

I covered it here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/miscellaneous/2013-06/vo.../ and I even sat down to a meeting with Volkswagen UK senior management over the issue. The recall is of the dry clutch 7-speed DSG, not the wet clutch 6-speed DSG. VW claims the problem is caused by operating conditions not experienced in Europe, such as heat, dust and perpetual traffic jams. There is some interesting discussion of this in the Backroom Forum at www.honestjohn.co.uk.
I was not in a position to push for a UK recall because my reader reports do not justify a recall and anyway, VOSA only orders recalls if manufacturers agree to them. However, I did suggest that if VW was confident of its DSG transmissions, it offered a 5-year warranty on them, as it has been forced to do in China and Russia where bureaucrats are not beholden to VAG as they are in Europe.
