Which all-round tyres do you recommend for my KIA Sportage?

I bought a 2-year-old KIA Sportage last September as a tow car for our caravan. It does this job admirably, but proved less than good in snow (in the Alps) or mud over the winter, and the tyre wear rate at 23,000 miles is not good either. I suspect that this is the result of the Hankook Optimo K406 tyres on which it came and which I shall have to change well before next winter. I don't want to have to go to pure off road tyres, so can you suggest a better 'all round' tyre that would handle such conditions with decent longevity and which is not too noisy on the motorway?

Continental Winter Contact GT 850, which the experts at www.tyrereviews.co.uk say are not only the best 'winter tyres' but can be left on all year.
