What is causing a sluggish gear change in my Ford Fiesta?
About three months ago I purchased a Fiesta 1.4 automatic (torque converter). It was only three months old with a very low mileage, an ex Motability car. I am pleased with the car, its performance is adequate for my needs and its economy is not unreasonable. However, it has one annoying problem in that when it has been standing overnight in the cold, it appears sluggish to change from first to second gear. It hangs onto first for what I consider an unreasonable length of time. This problem resolves itself when the engine has warmed up, after about seven miles. Changes thereafter are normal. I originally thought that this problem was caused because the transmission fluid was cold and sticky but I am having doubts and cannot help wondering whether I have a more serious problem developing.

Partly due to cold automatic transmission fluid. And partly deliberate to help the engine to warm up to operating temperature without stalling.
