Does my RAV4 really need a whole new fuel pump to replace a sensor?
My 2007 Toyota RAV4 T180 D-4D is sitting in the Toyota garage whilst they scratch their heads trying to work out why all the warning lights come on saying there is a fuel leak - but they can't find one. Apparently, one possibility is that the temperature sensor in the fuel pump is faulty. I am informed, however, that you cannot just replace the sensor, you have to replace the whole fuel pump at a cost of about £1500 (plus VAT). Could you please tell me if this is really true? I find it incredible that the sensor is not a separate component. Surely the sensor can be replaced without having to get a whole new fuel pump?

I simply don't know. Suggest you search for a 'Diesel Injection Specialist' to see if he has come across this problem before. Obviously if the pump is seized from lack of lubricity in the fuel it will need replacing. But if the fuel supply is merely blocked due to emulsified biofuel in the fuel filter as a result of the low ambient temperatures then all it needs is a new fuel filter.
