Should I buy a new Avensis or the Mazda 6 Tourer?

The time has come for me to think about changing my present vehicle, a 2009 Toyota Avensis D-4D 2.2 Tourer. Although the Avensis has had a fairly recent facelift I can’t help wondering how long it will be until a new model arrives, a fairly important consideration as the replacement will be kept for some time. With this in mind I’m drawn to the new Mazda 6 Tourer, but apart from the choice of manufacturer my main dilemma lies in the type of engine, diesel or petrol?

Having now retired my mileage has dropped quite considerably to 8000 per year, mostly on short trips, consequently I’m wondering whether petrol would now be a better option. I’m being somewhat confused on this issue by both the Mazda and Toyota salesmen assuring me the new range of diesels are able to cope with low mileage situations. Your advice on choice of manufacturer and engine type would be much appreciated.

I started testing a new Mazda 6 Skyactiv 2.2 150PS diesel automatic on 28 February for a year. They have new exhaust manifold in head technology that heats the engine up extremely quickly and should remove the problems of choked DPFs, but the petrol engines are also very efficient.

I read in a recent 4x4 review that the engine oil is quickly contaminated by the DPF. Is this the case on all diesel engines with a DPF, and can it affect the life of the engine?
