Which 4WD vehicle to replace my Subaru Forester?
I currently have a 2005 2.0-litre Subaru Forester and would appreciate your advice of a replacement. I bought this car in May 2009 and chose an AWD as we were moving to mid-Wales and an estate for my husband's drum kit and general transport. The Forester is a reasonable drive but lacks power on the hills around here (our ancient Clio does better) and the steering seems too light at higher speeds. Most importantly the car is expensive to run with high road tax and poor mpg of 28-30 mpg.
I would prefer a more economical estate or large saloon, not necessarily an AWD. I can afford about £6000 plus trade-in. Our enquiries regarding a trade in/private sale seem to indicate £2500 to £3500. The car has been serviced and is in good condition (mileage 73,000).

Everyone seems to want a powerful, economical 4-wheel-drive these days, but these are conflicting requirements. You will get a late old shape Nissan X-Trail 2.2 diesel for your money and, pushing it a bit, a 2007 - 2008 Honda CR-V 2.2iCTDI. The ideal would be a Skoda Octavia 4WD diesel estate, but these almost all seem to be very well used and only sold when nearly worn out.
