Which utility vehicle for everyday transport and workhorse duties?

I currently have two cars that I would like to amalgamate to one. The first is a Nissan Qashqai, which is used for everyday comfortable transport, and the other is a 1994 Isuzu Trooper SWB Duty used as a general workhorse hack and for towing a trailer. This is frequently loaded with unmentionables and driven across wet ground and is brilliant in the snow and ice. Unfortunately I have been advised that it will probably not pass its next MOT because of chassis rust. It is also pricey on road tax and thirsty, although I do run it on some used vegetable oil so that's not the real issue. It owes me nothing in financial terms.

I am considering vehicles that will do all the things I have mentioned in one package. I have decided on either the Toyota HiLux or Isuzu Rodeo double cab, used. Both come with either 2.5- or 3.0-litre diesels and both have brilliant reliability records and both are similar in price. Can you sway me in one direction or the other?

Yes. D-Max/Rodeo with the 2.5- or 3.0-litre chain cam iTEQ engine. Lovely, amiable drivetrain and no cambelt to worry about (the HiLux is belt cam). I've bought two so far, a D-Max Highlander and a Chevrolet Colorado (both in Thailand) and my sister-in-law's husband just bought a new D-Max.
