Why don't more people use all-weather tyres for year-round performance?

I must be one of many, I'm sure, who's now preaching the benefits of winter tyres on a small hatchback after cruising up snowy roads that were the equivalent of the north face of the Eiger before (Goodyear Ultragrip) and feeling smug when neighbours BMWs and 4x4s get stranded. However I think previous talk of buying an extra set of wheels and storing them in the garage may be putting people off since the cost is about £400 a set including storage. Another discovery is all-weather tyres (Bridgestone A001), which are almost as good and don't need replacing. I'm told the wear and fuel economy is almost as good as normal tyres, so a no-brainer, but I presume not so good for high-milers.

Testing seems to have shown that the current best winter tyres, Continental WinterContact TS850s, are not only the best winter tyres but are also suitable for year-round use. See www.tyrereviews.co.uk
