Which small car offers good fuel economy?

My wife has a Vauxhall Meriva 1.6 Club which is three years old in August and has done about 15,000 miles. It cost just under £9000 new as it was the last of the old models. I am considering replacing it with a smaller car such as a Kia Picanto, a Suzuki or Fiat 500, to hopefully save on fuel etc. The specs for these superminis show very low fuel consumptions, but what is a realistic estimate of mpg for journeys averaging less than 30 miles and as our current consumption is about 35mpg is this a change worth making? I know you like the Fiat 500. Do you think this is the best option?

Check our what real drivers are getting in real cars at www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg. Some are only getting 35mpg out of Fiat 500 TwinAirs, though the average is 47.5mpg.
