Which fun convertible sports car do you recommend?
My other half wants to buy a convertible for fun driving. He loves cars and used to have a Spitfire that he tuned up and drove as a young man. Now we are approaching our 50s, he has some spare cash and wants a fun car with some ‘go’ for sunny days. We test drove a Caterham today, and although the experience was fun, the car itself was a bit of a disappointment as it was just too basic and stripped bare inside. I think we need a bit of comfort. I like the idea of a Mazda MX-5 but he says he doesn't want a hairdresser's car. I am not a hairdresser but have only heard good things about the MX-5. The other criterion is that it must fit in our garage. The Caterham would have fitted in easily. A Toyota MR2 would fit, and I think he also mentioned a Honda S2000. What would you recommend? His budget is around £10,000 and the maximum garage length is 4100mm.

Mazda MX-5 1.8s are nice. But the MX-5 2.0 Sport 6-speed is as much of a driver’s car as he could ever need. They are even good on the track at trackdays. More together with better steering and 'feel' than a Honda S2000. See the honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar entry for what goes wrong and what to watch out for.
