Which 4WD vehicle for accessing tracks and green lanes?
I live half a mile off tarmac along forestry track and green lane. I have managed for 35 years with 2WD but the pattern of recent winters and regular snow seems to be set to last. Presently, I make do with a 20- year-old Escort estate with winter tyres. It is much better than my wife's modern car in snow. I don't want a fashionable off road monster, simply a Focus-sized 4WD estate, preferably free of dual mass flywheel and particulate filter. I cannot afford new. I have a budget of £10,000. Can you select one for me?

The answer to that one is a Skoda Octavia 4WD estate. The trouble is, it's been the answer to a lot of other people's problems, and most used examples have been well-used. There’s no escaping Dual Mass Flywheels and Diesel Particulate Filters, though. Alternatively, a 2WD Dacia Sandero Stepway, which has raised suspension and costs from £8000 new with a 5-year warranty, leaving plenty of money for cold weather tyres.

Roomy. More load space than the old car. Flexible and practical. Haldex clutched 4WD Scout version.
