Which SUV for winter driving, off-roading and motorway journeys?
Currently I own a fully loaded Mercedes C350 Sports. It is the best car I have ever owned and I have thoroughly enjoyed its power, road handling and comfort over the past five years and 68,000 miles. However, now that I am over 70, it is probably time for something a little more sensible. I live in the countryside and enjoy driving the Merc on the country roads but also take regular motorway trips to London and elsewhere. I only rarely go off road (especially in the C350) but might need to do a little more of that and when we get snow (rarely) I need something more robust. So I have been thinking about an SUV. I don't think I can live with less than six cylinders and the acceleration and smoothness of ride that they provide. I am not so bothered about fuel consumption, but performance, extra boot space, coping with moderate off-roading and snow are important to me. I also have to admit that my vanity will not let me buy a lesser marque. So I have been looking at the BMW X3 and Mercedes ML, but maybe there are other options. My absolute max £50k.

I don't think there's any need to go above an X3 2.0d. But BMW also does a 6-cylinder version and winter tyre packages for it.
