Why does the Audi A3 DSG/s-Tronic gearbox cause problems in slow-moving traffic?
I have had problems with my 2010 Audi A3. This model has a footrest on the right hand side of the driver's well and, after just missing a wall driving out of my garage, I realised that I had placed my foot on this and not, as I thought, on the accelerator. When I then switched to the brake I was actually going onto the accelerator pedal with very nearly dire results. Either stick something lumpy on the footrest or look at your feet when you first settle in the car.
After 30 years, I now drive one-footed as the Audi was a nightmare, kangaroo-ing out at junctions, manic in slow-moving traffic and actually rolling back on hill starts. After some scary drives, I realised that the transmission needs a moment when your foot switches from brake to accelerator. The Audi is now a pussy-cat but I shan't be buying another.

Your criticism of VAG's DSG/S-Tronic is echoed by scores of readers, but the safest way to drive any automatic at low speeds and while manoeuvring is to left foot brake. Then, if anything should happen, you can stop the car instantly. Don’t hold the car against the brakes. A DSG will definitely not like that. Just have your left foot over the brake so you can stamp on it if you need to and then stop instantly.
