Damp smell in a MINI - what could it be?

My wife complains about a damp smell in the boot of her Mini One 2006. Further inspection revealed the 'carpet' on either side to be totally sodden with water. As this forms part of the back seat arrangement I cannot remove it and have temporarily wedged it clear of the floor. Any ideas please as to what may be the cause?

Probably coming in through the one way cabin vents at the sides of the load area, or through a failed boot lid seal.
